Came across !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for a 1983 Olds Delta 88 Diesel. The car itself ain't too shabby, however what is really interesting is the description of the engine. The seller claims that the engine has been very smooth and economical during his ownership. Quote from the Ad:

The 105hp of the original 5.7L Oldsmobile V8 Diesel allow for relaxed and reliable propulsion. At cruising speeds on the Autobahn on the way to a car meet 1600km away I managed to average 9L/100km (26mpg). [...] The willingness of the engine to start with its original automatic pre-heat system and new glow plugs excites even after thirty years. Once the engine has reached temperature after ca. 15 minutes, the prechamber diesel will run so smoothly, that one would never suspect a Diesel under the hood.

This is too intriguing. Is this car a pleasant exception from the rule, is this Ad utter BS or were all the horror stories we were told about the LF9 just myths? Discuss.

Also, for €8k, NP or CP?

CP. My neighbor had one. it was literally the worst car ever made. His wouldn't start if it was colder than 60 degrees out and couldn't leave the driveway under it's own power until it warmed up for at least 20 minutes and only then could it cough, choke, and wheeze it's way to where he needed it to go.

Either Troll of the century or German.

Only a German would be able to make an "Olds" Diesel function properly.

That is said by many to be the singular worst engine ever fitted to a production car. Take that for what you will.

Well-maybe. I know this older guy-mad scientist/ racecar builder. Kinda guy that if said something- you listened. He had one and LOVED it.25 mpg from a big car. Yea i had a raised eyebrow too.

I presume like a Ferrari-or Porsche-proper maintance and a owner that gave it the love needed makes ALL the difference. NOT your average Oldsmobile owner fo' sure.

Funnily enough, there's a professional swimmer a few blocks down from me who has one, it's been rotting in the weeds for ten years.

I live in Warsaw, Poland.

I realize I'm comparing apples to oranges here, but that doesn't really seem like fuel economy to brag about even for 1983. My Panther may be an '07, but the powertrain is straight out of the early 90s. It's roughly the same size, but weighs at least 500 lbs more (Wiki says the Delta 88 weighed ~3550 lbs) and produces twice the HP while getting at least 27 on the highway. Granted, that's at 75 mph, he may have been going faster on the Autobahn, but out of a 105 hp diesel? Probably not.

./end unintelligible pointless rant
